Life on the Farm

I thought I'd like to be brave & find a new stitch that might showcase some of our Mainly Mohair that we'd dyed in variegated tones. Not being a big fan of lengthy projects, (or swatching!) a scarf seemed the obvious choice. In searching the internet for something that caught my eye, I found this link and decided to give this one a shot

I found the stitches really awkward at first but as I went along & understood the cause & effect it was more comfortable. I really liked the effect of the colours so figured a hat to match would be good. I wanted to do a hat on circular needles though, so how the heck do I do that? The scarf of course was worked flat, knit across & purl back, so if I wanted a circular hat, the same stitch wasn't going to work. I was pawing through my magazine collection & came across a hat, scarf & wrist warmer pattern that appeared very similar. Not exactly the same but I figured what the heck - close enough. It is in Creative Knitting January 2006 & called Crosshatch Cozy Wear. I don't know if you can get back issues, but here's their link:

I wanted a bit different look than the exact pattern, so I cast on 70 stitches in one of our white loopy mohair yarns & knit straight for about 3 inches, changed to the Mainly Mohair variegated colour & added 29 stitches so I had the same number as the pattern called for - 99. From there, I followed in pattern for about 4 inches & then began the decreases. The weird thing about the hat was that I ended up having to turn it inside out so the pattern I wanted was on the outside. I'm still wondering what's with that? Not swatching always comes back to haunt me. The hat is really too small but it did give the effect I was looking for.
